I was so dissatisfied and disillusioned by Nokia dropping Maemo OS after 5 years of development, at the point it finally reached mass market appeal, that I got the itch.
What could I do about it? Well… Nokia is not going to produce another Maemo device, nor support the current ones. It obviously needs a new host. Let’s give it a crash cart therapy, pick scalpel and transplant to a new body. The best of the breed – Android designed hardware. These boxen already have perfectly integrated Linux kernel and “just” need the rootfs swap.
After some research I found that nor Qualcomm MSM7200A, nor Samsung S3C6410 chips have open 3D driver available. This makes the project problematic, since Maemo 5 UI requires working OpenGL ES acceleration.
But there is hope. The upcoming Motorola XT720 Motoroi has exactly the same hardware specifications as Motorola Droid or Nokia N900 itself. I’m trying to get one as soon it gets available.

Maybe http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?p=653766#post653766 sounds interesting to you and you could contribute to that!?
You got me wrong. I’m not interested in Android for Maemo hardware, but Maemo for Android hardware.
Been following your other ports…now have desire also, very interested in this mate! keep up good work
Don’t count on it. Desire uses Qualcomm chip with no drivers available.
I’m waiting for Motorola XT701 with the same hardware as N900.
