It was over a month ago and, oh boy, was it a good change! :-) Last time I tried SuSE several years ago I was hit by RPM-hell badly, reverted to Gentoo and never looked back. Then I grew to binary packages distribution and switched to Ubuntu.

When Nokia decided to ditch Maemo and its Debian based underlying technologies I wasn’t happy. Then I needed to package some things for my MeeGo ports, met OBS and was amazed how great tool it is. Then I realized how good packaging tool RPM became during the years.

Having openSUSE as my main system gives me the solid base of stable and well tested system and access to bleeding edge software in the areas I want. OBS builds the most recent GNOME or web servers not only for the running (Factory) distribution but for the stable trees too. So I have the flexibility of mixed stable+experimental system I was used to running Gentoo, without the hassle of building it myself.

There is one more thing – openSUSE developers does not feel that they know better than the upstream developers and does not ditch features users are expecting to find in their desktop environment, replacing them with custom, unstable and incompatible thingies. You still have this vanilla feeling using openSUSE – with just a bit of chameleon branding sprinkled here and there.

Pewnie domyślacie się jak wyglądały dziś drogi dojazdowe do Madrytu, które w normalny dzień są niemożliwie zakorkowane zarówno w poranny jak i wieczorny szczyt (z tego powodu zwykle jeżdżę komunikacją, która tu jest bardzo dobra).

A więc domyślacie się, jak to wyglądało dziś, prawda..? Ja też nie… W miarę zbliżania się do Madrytu moje zdumienie rosło i rosło, i rosło… i rosło… Absolutnie żadnych korków. Jechało się jak w weekend, czy inne święto. Po dojechaniu do pracy sprawa się wyjaśniła… Jest nas tu może 30%. Nowa świecka tradycja – Święto Strajkującej Komunikacji Miejskiej.

Najwyraźniej coś się zmieniło w ostatnich latach i Dell zapomniał o swoich chlubnych początkach.

Wraz z wydaniem nowego urządzenia z serii Dell Mini, firma zadebiutowała na rynku urządzeń pracujących pod kontrolą systemu operacyjnego Android. Nic w tym dziwnego – system stworzony przez Google jest jedną z najciekawszych propozycji dla urządzeń przenośnych.

O ile sam Android wydany jest na licencji Apache, która daje dużą dowolność w użyciu i modyfikacji oprogramowania, to do obsługi niskopoziomowej sprzętu używa jądra Linux. Licencja na której wydany jest Linux, to Powszechna Licencja GNU – GPL. GPL również daje dużą swobodę w użyciu i modyfikacji oprogramowania, pod jednym właściwie warunkiem – razem z binarnym oprogramowaniem musisz dostarczyć jego źródła, pozwalające na własnoręczne zbudowanie tego samego pliku binarnego.

To właśnie wymaganie Dell ma głęboko w nosie. Premiera Dell Streak (wcześniej Dell Mini 5) miała miejsce 4 czerwca 2010. Od tamtej pory Dell jest absolutnie głuchy na prośby użytkowników, którzy zakupili urządzenia Streak, o udostępnienie źródeł kernela Linuksa którego używają.

Scenariusze postępowania są dwa: Jeśli da się klienta zignorować, np. nie odpisując na e-mail, czy wiadomość, to jest ignorowany. Jeśli zaś klient zadzwoni do pomocy technicznej i nie da się go zignorować, to otrzymuje prośbę o pozostawienie danych kontaktowych i zapewnienie o kontakcie po uzyskaniu informacji. Teraz wystarczy nie oddzwonić.

Wiele firm łamało już licencję GPL i korzystało z pracy setek wolontariuszy, nie dając nic w zamian. Ale chyba żadna nie robiła tego dotąd tak jawnie jak Dell, śmiejąc się ze swojego własnego motto.

It´s a great city. I got on a walk around right after I arrived and just got back. I was walking for several hours and there was always something else, something new around the corner. I am a city born man and I admire this city. Last time I was so revering, was when I was walking around Beirut with no reason besides sight seeing.

Looking what tommorow brings…

This time I got rid of sluggish Ubuntu Linux, that brought more and more bloat with every release. Lucid added even Erlang virtual machine to the stack! As if Mono alongside with Python wasn’t eating my CPU cycles enough. What next? Mandatory Java running in background?

The first idea was calling back my old friend Gentoo Linux. But I had a feeling I wanted to try something else. The lack of fast installed binary packages was the thing that switched me from Gentoo to Ubuntu in the first place.

A lot of former Gentoo users had switched to Arch Linux. So I gave it a try and it’s behaving very well so far. NCurses installer was very straightforward. Familiar text mode boot I missed so long. X running after several seconds later. Gnome looks as it should. (I hate recent Ubuntu contraptions.) Epiphany is usable again – my all-time favourite browser. Well configured pacman is a very fast and nice tool. BSD style configuration and init scripts are great! No more symlink hell and esoteric configuration files.

So far, so good. :-)

These weren’t a real machines but OpenVZ guests from the beginning of the year, nevertheless this ends an epoch… of running Chrome on self assembled PC machines. ;-) I don’t have this personal feeling to the new Dell 1U servers that are running the show today. But they are much, much, much more reliable, as the Chrome.pl hosted domains users may tell by the stability of the service last year. New servers are running at ~5% of load, so it gives plenty of room to expand in the future.

Roger Alsing created a program that paints a set of 50 semi transparent polygons based on a continuous set of parameters (reminiscent of a DNA chain). Next he created a program that randomly modifies this DNA-like set, paints a picture based on it and compares the effect to the desired result (best fit to environment).

After 100k generations he got a picture of… see for yourself.
